10/09 Science Fair

GRADES: K-12th
TIME: 4:00-7:00 PM LOCATION: Gym DESCRIPTION: Mountaineer Homeschool Hub students are invited to participate in the MHH Science Fair! After investigating a topic through research, observation, and experimentation, students will prepare a short science report and create a science fair display board. Students will be placed in grade appropriate groups for “judging” and awards. Tentative groups: K-3, 4th-6th, 7th-9th, 10th-12th. Groups are subject to change according to the amount of sign ups received. Entrance fee will be waived for students who are enrolled in a Hub science fair class. PRICE: $10 (FREE with Science Fair Class Enrollment)

10/24 Northern Saw-whet Owl field trip (6th+)

GRADES: 6th+
TIME: 8:30 PM-12:00 AM LOCATION: Valley Falls State Park 720 Valley Falls Rd, Fairmont, WV 26554 DESCRIPTION: Join us for a Member's only rare behind-the-scenes look at one of WV’s smallest and most secretive owls! Master Birder Joey Herron will lead an educational program about Northern Saw-whet Owls, their migration, and the important research being conducted through the banding program. Following the program, we will participate in net checks every 30 minutes as we wait for an owl to be captured. If an owl is successfully captured, participants will have the opportunity to observe the banding process, learn how the owl is safely handled, and get a close look at the owl before it is released back into the wild. Photos will be permitted during the observation. Mr. Herron will have Saw-whet Owl stickers available for purchase, $5 ea. and accepts donations to support the program. *Please Note: This is a genuine wildlife research experience, so an owl capture cannot be guaranteed. Every effort will be made to catch an owl, but weather, migration patterns, and the behavior of the birds are unpredictable. If an owl is not captured by midnight, the program will end and we will head home. **Important Field Trip Info: Park in front of or behind the Superintendent’s office building. Bring your own folding chairs. Dress warmly! We will be outside for an extended period, including while waiting between net checks. Participants must be able to sit quietly and remain still while waiting and during net checks so we do not disturb the owls or interfere with the banding process. PRICE: FREE

TIME: 10:00 AM-12:00 PM LOCATION: Gym DESCRIPTION: Join us for our Annual Hub Halloween party for our K-5th grade students. We will celebrate the season with a Trick or Treat trail, games, costume contest and more! This is a Members only event and will require a sign up to attend. PRICE: FREE
